How to use the dimensions

Working bed width is a practical selection threshold—not a guarantee. It uses the plant’s maintained footprint plus a small allowance for airflow and access.

1. Measure the usable bed

Measure from the fence or wall to the path, lawn or driveway edge. Exclude access space needed for gates, bins, meters and eaves.

2. Choose the mature footprint

Do not select from the nursery-pot size. Where a plant is marked “narrow when clipped,” budget for side pruning from the start.

3. Check local constraints

Confirm root space, drainage, overhead wires, boundary rules, local weed status and cultivar availability before buying.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Why is the hedge bare at the base?

Common causes are planting too close to a solid fence, clipping the top wider than the base, or insufficient light. Keep the hedge slightly narrower at the top and avoid crowding.

Why did a “1 m wide” plant exceed 1 m?

Dimensions vary with climate, soil, irrigation and pruning. Some labels describe a maintained size, not the natural mature spread. Use the fit rating and watch-out note together.

How closely should screening plants be spaced?

A starting point is roughly 60–80% of the expected maintained width. Tighter spacing closes faster but increases root competition, pruning and disease risk.

Can these plants grow in pots?

Several can, but containers reduce achievable height and increase watering demand. Use large, stable pots with drainage and choose naturally compact candidates rather than forcing a large tree into a small container.
